Your donation will provide bicycles that change lives.
My name is Alex Clark, a proud educator, 2023 DC Teacher of the Year, and 2024 SHAPE America National PE Teacher of the Year. I’m also the founder of Prime Ability, a youth cycling and career readiness program based at Dunbar High School in Washington, DC. Our mission is simple but urgent: more kids on bikes, less kids on the streets.
Through Prime Ability, we provide young people—many from communities disproportionately affected by gun violence—with access to cycling, mentorship, and career pathways through several programs:
Prime Ability Programs
-
Youth Cycling Team – Students train and compete in mountain biking and road cycling races locally and nationally.
-
Bike Tech & Mechanic Certification Program – Our in-school bike shop teaches students hands-on repair and assembly skills while earning industry-recognized certifications.
-
Bike Bus Program – Monthly morning rides to school that promote attendance, community, and leadership while connecting students with local businesses through “Coffee Talks.”
-
Outdoor Leadership Trips – Annual multi-day cycling and camping trips that introduce students to nature, resilience, and personal growth.
-
Career Pathways in Cycling – Students gain real-world experience and opportunities to work in bike shops and the cycling industry.
This year, I’m running the Chicago Marathon to raise awareness of teen gun violence—a reality that has taken far too many of my students. Through Prime Ability, I’ve seen the transformative power of cycling. Bikes give young people not just a healthy outlet, but also confidence, community, and a path toward success both on and off the streets.
Every mile I run is for them—for the students who have found freedom, belonging, and hope through cycling, and for those we’ve lost too soon.
I’m asking for your support with a small donation to help me reach my goal and continue creating opportunities for youth to pedal toward brighter futures. Please also consider sharing this page with others who believe in the power of sport, community, and opportunity.
Thank you for your support! 🚲
