Your donation will provide bicycles that change lives.

This is the second time that I am doing this fundraising event!  After raising $1,650, me and my dad will go on a bike ride from Milwaukee to Chicago. The first time was in 2012 when I was just 5 years old. However, at that time I was not much help in the fundraising process. Additionally, I did not participate in the long bike ride as I elected to stay in a trailer attached to my dad's bike. This time I am in charge of this fundraiser and I will be doing the Milwaukee to Chicago ride on my own bike alongside my dad.

Why does your donation help?

Bicycles hold significant importance for children in many African countries, influencing various aspects of their lives positively. Here are some specific ways bicycles impact children in African contexts:

  1. Improved Access to Education:

    • Distance to Schools: In many African countries, children often have to walk long distances to reach their schools, which can be exhausting and time-consuming. Bicycles reduce travel time, making it easier for children to attend school regularly and punctually.
    • School Retention: With easier access to education, there is a higher likelihood of children staying in school longer, reducing dropout rates and improving literacy and educational attainment.
  2. Enhanced Physical Health:

    • Exercise: Cycling provides regular physical activity, promoting better health and fitness among children. This is particularly important in regions where access to recreational facilities may be limited.
    • Reduced Fatigue: Bicycles help mitigate the physical strain associated with walking long distances, ensuring children arrive at school less tired and more ready to learn.
  3. Economic Benefits:

    • Cost Savings: Bicycles offer a cost-effective transportation solution, reducing the need for families to spend on public transport or other forms of commuting.
    • Income Generation: Older children and families can use bicycles for small-scale business activities, such as delivering goods or providing transport services, contributing to household income.
  4. Safety and Security:

    • Reduced Risks: Walking long distances can expose children, especially girls, to various dangers, including harassment and violence. Bicycles provide a faster and safer mode of transport, enhancing personal security.
    • Emergency Transport: In remote areas, bicycles can be vital for emergency transportation, such as getting medical help or accessing essential services quickly.
  5. Environmental Sustainability:

    • Eco-Friendly: Bicycles are environmentally friendly, producing no emissions and helping reduce the carbon footprint. This is particularly important in regions where environmental degradation and pollution are concerns.
  6. Social and Community Engagement:

    • Increased Mobility: Bicycles enable children to participate more actively in community activities, social events, and extracurricular programs, fostering social inclusion and community engagement.
    • Peer Interactions: Easier transportation helps children visit friends and relatives more often, strengthening social bonds and support networks.
  7. Empowerment and Life Skills:

    • Independence: Owning and managing a bicycle teaches children responsibility and self-reliance, contributing to their personal development and confidence.
    • Skills Development: Learning to ride and maintain a bicycle develops practical skills, including coordination, balance, and basic mechanical knowledge.
  8. Addressing Gender Disparities:

    • Empowering Girls: In many African societies, cultural norms and safety concerns often restrict girls' mobility. Bicycles can empower girls by providing them with a means to travel independently and safely, supporting their education and broader opportunities.

By addressing these various factors, bicycles play a crucial role in improving the lives of children in African countries, contributing to their education, health, safety, and overall development.
